6.5 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Taiwan...

Do you know what's lurking in your breakfast cereal?

Saturday, April 24, 2010
I did this post for PYP on Friday, after seeing an article on the best and worst breakfast cereals. And here I thought I was doing so good buying the Raisin Bran cereal instead of all those "sugary kids cereals"...OOPS!

If there is enough interest, I am happy to keep doing the blog even after we move. What do you think?

Thursday, April 22, 2010
I'm sure some of you have noticed the lack of posts recently. No, I'm not giving up on the blog. And no, I'm not just not showing you what I've been buying recently. I honestly haven't been buying much in the way of groceries - period. My attentions (and dollars) are needed elsewhere at this time because, barring any surprises in the next few weeks, it looks like we're going to be moving!

We have decided to drastically cut back on our grocery spending in order to save some money for the many incidental costs that come up when buying a new (to us) home and moving. And we're able to do this because of our food storage! We will be relying on it heavily over the next few weeks and months, especially our frozen stuff (since the stuff in the freezer is going to be problematic to move anyway). I'm still buying produce and dairy, and taking advantage of a few stock-up items when they are on a really good sale. I will still post what I buy, it's just that you'll see fewer shopping trip posts over the next little while because I will be shopping a lot less frequently.

I will continue to post emergency preparedness and food storage info and links, but it might not be as frequently for the next little while. Things are a little hectic with all of the paperwork and contracts and appraisals and inspections and everything else. Plus, I'm sorta feeling stumped as to what topics to address for some reason.

So, if any of you have any topics you want to see discussed or questions you would like to ask, or if anyone knows of someone who might be looking to buy a cute house in Murray, let me know! :)

Spiritual Self-Reliance

Sunday, April 18, 2010

The Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of spirit, without a body of flesh and bones. He is often referred to as the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, or the Comforter.

Roles of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost works in perfect unity with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, fulfilling several roles to help us live righteously and receive the blessings of the gospel.

He "witnesses of the Father and the Son" (2 Nephi 31:18) and reveals and teaches "the truth of all things" (Moroni 10:5). We can receive a sure testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ only by the power of the Holy Ghost. His communication to our spirit carries far more certainty than any communication we can receive through our natural senses.

As we strive to stay on the path that leads to eternal life, the Holy Ghost can guide us in our decisions and protect us from physical and spiritual danger.

Through Him, we can receive gifts of the Spirit for our benefit and for the benefit of those we love and serve (see D&C 46:9–11).

He is the Comforter (John 14:26). As the soothing voice of a loving parent can quiet a crying child, the whisperings of the Spirit can calm our fears, hush the nagging worries of our life, and comfort us when we grieve. The Holy Ghost can fill us "with hope and perfect love" and "teach [us] the peaceable things of the kingdom" (Moroni 8:26; D&C 36:2).

Through His power, we are sanctified as we repent, receive the ordinances of baptism and confirmation, and remain true to our covenants (see Mosiah 5:1–6; 3 Nephi 27:20; Moses 6:64–68).

He is the Holy Spirit of Promise (see Ephesians 1:13; D&C 132:7, 18–19, 26). In this capacity, He confirms that the priesthood ordinances we have received and the covenants we have made are acceptable to God. This approval depends on our continued faithfulness.

The Gift of the Holy Ghost

All honest seekers of the truth can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost, leading them to Jesus Christ and His gospel. However, the fulness of the blessings given through the Holy Ghost are available only to those who receive the gift of the Holy Ghost and remain worthy.

After a person is baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one or more Melchizedek Priesthood holders lay their hands on the person's head and, in a sacred priesthood ordinance, confirm him or her a member of the Church. As part of this ordinance, called confirmation, the person is given the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The gift of the Holy Ghost is different from the influence of the Holy Ghost. Before baptism, a person can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost from time to time and through that influence can receive a testimony of the truth. After receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, a person has the right to the constant companionship of that member of the Godhead if he or she keeps the commandments.

American Red Cross Earthquake Safety Checklist

Friday, April 16, 2010

Now that we've had a little shaker to remind us of the dangers of living near a fault line, how prepared are you in the event of an earthquake? You can use this great earthquake safety checklist from the American Red Cross to find out!

Another Utah Earthquake - TODAY!

Thursday, April 15, 2010
I know you're not going to believe this, but there was a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Utah today, just outside of Randolph...

From "Thursday's quake was the largest in Utah since a magnitude 5.9 temblor hit near St. George in 1992, according to Relu Burlacu of the University of Utah seismograph stations."

From the Deseret News: Largest earthquake in Utah in 18 years.

I actually felt it - did you? (The chair I was sitting in at the time shook ever so slightly, although nothing else in the house rattled, and it only lasted a fraction of a second.)

Preparing Emergency Supplies - FHE Activity

Spiritual Self-Reliance

Sunday, April 11, 2010

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we are blessed to be led by living prophets—inspired men called to speak for the Lord, as did Moses, Isaiah, Peter, Paul, Nephi, Mormon, and other prophets of the scriptures. We sustain the President of the Church as prophet, seer, and revelator—the only person on the earth who receives revelation to guide the entire Church. We also sustain the counselors in the First Presidency and the members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators.

Like the prophets of old, prophets today testify of Jesus Christ and teach His gospel. They make known God's will and true character. They speak boldly and clearly, denouncing sin and warning of its consequences. At times, they may be inspired to prophesy of future events for our benefit.

We can always trust the living prophets. Their teachings reflect the will of the Lord, who declared: "What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same" (D&C 1:38).

Our greatest safety lies in strictly following the word of the Lord given through His prophets, particularly the current President of the Church. The Lord warns that those who ignore the words of the living prophets will fall (see D&C 1:14–16). He promises great blessings to those who follow the President of the Church:

"Thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;

"For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.

"For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name's glory" (D&C 21:4–6).

Water Storage to the Rescue ... Again!

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

You know it's going to be a bad day when you go to turn on the kitchen faucet in the morning and there is no water...again...

The last time this happened (a few months ago), we ended up with 2 cracks in a water pipe and a nice waterfall in the basement (not to mention all the soaked drywall and an appearance on Channel 2 News that night).

Luckily, this time the break is OUTSIDE and not inside. The water main just down the street from us burst this morning, and we are now without water while they fix it. Not so easy to fix oatmeal on a cold, snowy morning without water. But have no fear - there were water bottles in the garage just waiting to be used!

We have a tendency to get into the mindset that our emergency preparations and food storage are for use in some catastrophic, major natural disaster like a hurricane or an earthquake. But the odds show that it's much more likely that we'll use those items for much smaller "emergencies" - like a water main shutoff, or an extended illness or unemployment, or even just a night when there's really not much time to fix a big dinner and you just have to grab something quick off the shelf!

I've relied on my stored water twice now in the last 6 months. Granted, these were not major emergencies, and we would have survived without the stored water, but it just made it so much easier since we had it. I encourage you to make sure you've got at least a little bit of water stored somewhere in your home - it doesn't have to be a lot. You just never know when you may need to use it!

Spiritual Self-Reliance

Sunday, April 4, 2010

Because of the Fall of Adam and Eve, we are subject to physical death, which is the separation of the spirit from the body. Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all people will be resurrected and saved from physical death (see 1 Corinthians 15:22). Resurrection is the reuniting of the spirit with the body in an immortal state, no longer subject to disease or death.

The Savior was the first person on this earth to be resurrected. The New Testament contains several accounts testifying that He rose from the tomb (see Matthew 28:1–8; Mark 16:1–14; Luke 24:1–48; John 20:1–29; 1 Corinthians 15:1–8; 2 Peter 1:16–17).

When the resurrected Lord appeared to His Apostles, He helped them understand that He had a body of flesh and bones. He said, "Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have" (Luke 24:39). He also appeared to the Nephites after His Resurrection (see 3 Nephi 11:10–17).

At the time of the resurrection, we will "be judged according to [our] works. . . . We shall be brought to stand before God, knowing even as we know now, and have a bright recollection of all our guilt" (Alma 11:41, 43). The eternal glory we receive will depend on our faithfulness. Although all people will be resurrected, only those who have come unto Christ and partaken of the fulness of His gospel will inherit exaltation in the celestial kingdom.

An understanding and testimony of the resurrection can give us hope and perspective as we experience the challenges, trials, and triumphs of life. We can find comfort in the assurance that the Savior lives and that through His Atonement, "he breaketh the bands of death, that the grave shall have no victory, and that the sting of death should be swallowed up in the hopes of glory" (Alma 22:14).

What I'm Buying - Fresh Market 4/3

Saturday, April 3, 2010
Here's what I picked up today at Fresh Market:

(1) Dubuque spiral-sliced ham, on sale 1.18/lb
(2) SoftScrub cleansers, on sale 2.50 (1.50 after coupon)
(2) Dreyer's ice cream, on sale 1.98 (limit 2)
(6) Hunt's SnackPak puddings, on sale .78
(2) Wonka Runts jelly beans, 2.50 (2.00 ea after coupon)
(4) Western Family Easter candies, on sale .50 ea
(3) Western Family Easter candies, on sale 1.00 ea
(1) Ziploc containers 3 pk, on sale 1.98 (.98 after store coupon)

I used (2) 1.00/1 printable SoftScrub coupons [see LINK] and (1) 1.00/2 printable coupon for the Wonka candies [no longer available].

The Ziploc containers are supposed to have a $1.00 coupon on them according to the sales ad, but when I got to the store, not a single package had a coupon on it. So, I just showed the cashier where they were listed for .98 each in the ad and she adjusted the price for me.

Total: $29.97

The Easter candies are actually for General Conference this weekend - they are for playing "Conference Squares". My kids LOVE this game during conference! (Back in the day, it was just called "Conference Bingo"...)

It's that time of year again!

Take time this weekend to:

1) Change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

2) Rotate the food in the 72-hour kits.

3) Change out clothes and other items in your 72-hour kits that may need to be adjusted for sizes or seasons.

4) Check your water supply for leaks or other issues.
