Do you ever have trouble trying to print an internet coupon in your browser?

When people post links to the coupons, the link is specific based on what internet browser the person was using. If you use a differnt browser to click on that coupon link, you may run into trouble. You'll have to go into the address bar and change a few letters in order to get the coupon to print. Here's how:

The newest addition to our emergency supplies...

(Sorry the picture is a little blurry...)

This is the Kaito Voyager KA500 5-way Powered Emergency AM/FM/Weather Alert Radio.

As I was doing more research on communications during emergencies, I was looking at our little hand-crank flashlight/radio combo and realized that it did not pick up the weather alert stations, so I wanted to make sure we had at least one portable radio on hand that could pick up those channels in an emergency.

I happened to find a good deal on this radio on Amazon a week or so ago. It is powered by one of four options: rechargable battery that is charged by a hand crank, regular AA batteries, AC cord, or solar power. It receives AM and FM stations, the 7 weather stations, and shortwave stations 1 & 2. It can also receive wireless NOAA weather alerts. It has a built-in light, and has ports so that you can use it to charge other small electronics (like cellphones).

There are a lot of similar products with similar options out there, so you really can take your pick based on the kinds of features you would like. Here are some links for examples:

What am I doing with all those crescent rolls you ask?

Thursday, October 15, 2009
Well, I'm NOT leaving them out on my counter for four hours (actually, I did and TWO of them exploded...) :)

We like to use them to make Pigs in Blankets. Since two of the containers were kind enough to open themselves yesterday afternoon, that's what we made for dinner last night!

I separate the dough into the four rectangles (not 8 triangles - but you could - we just like the hotdog to be fully enclosed and it keeps the cheese inside too), press out each rectangle a little with clean hands, then put a slice of American cheese on top of the dough and a hotdog on top of the cheese and roll them up, pinch the ends, then bake as directed (sometimes I have to add 2-3 minutes). Make sure to have ketchup on hand!

[So, each can of 8 crescent rolls makes 4 piggies...so we use two cans to make 8.]

If you want to make them more filling and sneak some better nutrition in, try pureeing some white beans with a little water and spread just a light layer of that mixture under the cheese slice. Or you could go with cauliflower puree, too. You'll hardly notice any difference in taste!

If you're looking for a cute idea for a Halloween dinner, check THESE out!

If you like chicken pot pie, and will be headed to Albertsons this week to do the GM promo, check out THIS recipe. Every item you need for this meal (even the flour!) is on sale and part of the GM promo!

Update on the Can Sealer

Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Well, I haven't had a chance to get the can sealer yet this week - things have been crazy! I spent more than an hour yesterday with my arms elbow-deep in disgusting dirty dishwasher water because our dishwasher decided not to drain. And I'm still a little sick, so I don't know that it would be a wise idea for me to canning food while I might potentially sneeze or cough around it or otherwise get germs in it.

SOOOO...would anyone be too mad if we just scheduled for next week instead? How about Wednesday night at the church building? (If you can't make it that night, I'll have the sealer for several days so we can just set it up in my garage whenever...)

Gingerbread Pancakes with Buttermilk Syrup

Crystal Godfrey from "EverydayFoodStorage.net" was featured on Studio5 this morning. She showed one of the reporters how to use bean puree in brownie and cake mixes, and then did a demo of gingerbread pancakes.

The pancakes use wheat, but you DO NOT need a wheat grinder - just a blender! These look really good and I can't wait to try them out. Here is the LINK to the video!

What I'm Buying - Albertsons 10/14

So, the Albertsons thing is going to be tricky for the next little while. Most of the stores in the state will become new AFS stores on October 25th. So until then, they are not running much in the way of promos. But you might be able to find some good deals on Albertsons-brand items as they clear those out.

For those in Utah, there are a couple of Albertsons stores that were NOT part of the sell-off and that will remain Albertsons until the first of next year. They are:
both Orem Albertsons
Tooele Albertsons
90th S and Redwood Albertsons
70th S and Redwood (West Jordan) Albertsons

These five stores will continue to get the full ads and run the regular Albertsons promos.

I live close to the 70th and Redwood store, so I was able to participate in the General Mills promo this morning. Here's what I picked up:

Transaction #1:

(4) Progresso chicken broth, on sale 2.00 (1.50 after coupon)
(2) Progresso High Fiber soup, on sale 1.67 (.67 after coupon)
(2) Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, on sale 1.67 (1.17 after coupon)
(4) Pillsbury crescent rolls, on sale 1.67 (1.17 after coupon)
(2) YoPlait Yo-Plus 4pk yogurt, on sale 2.50 (1.50 after coupon)
(1) Gillete Fusion Phantom razor, on special 4.99 (.99 after coupon)

I used (4) .50/1 coupons for the broth [see GeneralMills 10/4 insert], (2) 1.00/1 printable coupons for the soup [see LINK here - may not be available still], (1) 1.00/2printable coupon for the cinnamon rolls [see LINKS at bottom of first post at PYP], (2) 1.00/2 printable coupons for the crescent rolls [see same PYP post above], (1) 1.00/1 printable coupon for the yogurt [see GroupA coupons at GrocerySmarts], (1) 1.00/1 coupon for the yogurt [see GeneralMills 9/13], and (1) 4.00/1 coupon for the razor [see P&G 9/27].

Total: $24.62 + got $10 Catalina coupon for the GM promo + got $3 Catalina for buying the Pillsbury rolls [see info HERE]

I really figured the store would be packed and they would be out of a lot of things, so I only prepped one quick list this morning. But I got there and the store director said it had been dead all morning and that they were very well stocked, so I went home, clipped more coupons, and then went back! :)

Transaction #2:

(6) Yoplait GoGurts, on sale 2.50 (2.10 after coupon)
(1) Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, on sale 1.67 (1.17 after coupon)
(1) Pillsbury orange sweet rolls, on sale 1.67 (1.17 after coupon)
(4) Pillsbury crescent rolls, on sale 1.67 (1.17 after coupon)
(1) Gardetto's snack, on sale 1.67 (no coupon - just picked it up to make sure I made it past the $25 mark for the promo)

I used (2) .80/2 printable coupons for the gogurts [see GroupA at GrocerySmarts], (1) .75/2 coupon for the gogurts [see GeneralMills 10/4 or 9/13], (1) 1.00/2 printable for the sweet rolls [see Transaction #1], and (2) 1.00/2 printable coupons for the crescent rolls [see Transaction #1].

I then used my $10 and $3 Catalinas from the previous transaction.

Total: $9.13 + got $10 Catalina for GM promo + got $3 Catalina for Pillsbury items

My question to you...

Sunday, October 11, 2009
Now that we've been doing this blog for awhile, what are the things that you are struggling with in regards to food storage or couponing? What questions do you have? Are you wanting more instructions or examples on specific topics? Do you feel like you're making progress?

Some interesting price comparisons...

Albertsons has fabulous deals on Quaker items this week! I was a bit curious as to just how good the deals were, so last weekend I spent some time in Walmart jotting down shelf prices for my price book. Here's what I found:

Aunt Jemima syrup 24oz
Walmart everyday price: 2.50
Albertsons sale price: 2.00
Albertsons sale with promo (buy 10 items): 1.50
Albertsons sale with promo and coupon: 1.00
Difference: 1.50

(The generic GreatValue equivalent at Walmart was 1.94.)

Quaker Cap'n Crunch cereals 14-16oz
Walmart everyday price: 2.00
Albertsons sale price: 1.50
Albertsons sale with promo: 1.00
Difference: 1.00

Quaker Chewy granola bars 10ct
Walmart everyday price: 2.26
Albertsons sale price: 1.50
Albertsons sale with promo: 1.00
Albertsons sale with promo and coupon: .63 or .50
Difference: 1.63 or 1.76

(The generic GreatValue equivalent was 3.00 for an 18ct box, or .17 each. Even at just the Albertsons sale price without promo or coupons, the Quaker ones are only .15 each!)

Quaker Instant oatmeal 10.9-15.1oz
Walmart everyday price: 2.54
Albertsons sale price: 2.00
Albertsons sale with promo: 1.50
Difference: 1.04

(The generic GreatValue equivalent was 1.78.)

Quaker oats, old fashioned or quick, 42oz
Walmart everyday price: 2.72
Albertsons sale price: 2.00
Albertsons sale with promo: 1.50
Difference: 1.22

(The generic GreatValue equivalent was 2.24, so the Albertsons sale even beats the Walmart generic!)

If you bought one of each item at both stores, here's what your totals would be, assuming that you DO NOT do the Albertsons promo and DO NOT use any coupons (totals are before tax):

Walmart - $12.02
Albertsons sale - $9.00
Difference - $3.02

Now, let's say you want to take advantage of the "Buy 10 Save $5" promo. Let's buy one of each item and then 5 extra of the cheapest item, the cereal, to get our total to 10 items. So that's 6 cereal total and then one of each of the other four items. We don't use any coupons at all, we just thake advantage of the "Buy 10 Save $5" promo using our Preferred Savings card. Here's what the totals would be (totals are before tax):

Walmart - $22.02
Albertsons - $11.50
Difference - $10.52

You've saved 48% over the Walmart "Everyday Low Prices" and you didn't even have to use coupons!

Now, I don't have anything against Walmart (well, okay, I have some issues with our particular nearby Walmart, but not with Walmart in general), and this is not meant to shed a bad light on Walmart. This is just to highlight that you don't necessarily have to use coupons in order to save a lot of money on your groceries! You just need to be savvy in your shopping.

Water Filtration Bottles Now Available at Distribution Center

I was at the Distribution Center in Ft. Union yesterday and happened to see that they are now stocking a water filtration bottle for emergency preparedness!

They are 28oz bottles and come with two filters (one already installed, and then a second one as replacement). They are made by Seychelle - www.seychelle.com. Price at the Distribution Center is $22.00 each, and includes the bottle and both filters.

For those not near a Distribution Center, these can be ordered online HERE through ldscatalog.com (the Distribution Center's online site).

You can also order a water filtration bottle with only one filter for $16.50, or just a replacement filter for $9.00.

These are fairly new, so they may not be available at all Distribution Centers yet. They are currently out of stock online, so keep checking back.

Not a fan of broccoli? Did you know that about 25% of the population has "extra" taste buds that are extra sensitive to the bitter flavors in broccoli? Brocoli is super good for you, but it can be hard to get past that bitter taste. If you fall into that category (like my husband), then try THIS method of preparing broccoli. The roasting carmelizes the broccoli and brings out more of its natural sugars to combat the bitter tastes. We had this last week and it was fabulous - best broccoli I have ever tasted, and husband loved it! He even made it for himself again a few days later! :)

Portable Home Can Sealer

Tuesday, October 6, 2009
I've talked with a few of you about this, but for those who I haven't gotten to:

I've got 50 pounds of steel cut oats as well as some pasta that I need to get sealed in #10 cans, and I wasn't able to get it done during our last Enrichment activity. So, I'm going to go get the sealer and have it for a few days next week.

If you are interested in using it while I've got it, please let me know. If there is enough interest, we can get together and do it over at the ward building, or just set it up in my garage. If you need cans or lids (or materials), let me know and I will get you pricing, and then I can pick up any needed items when I go to get the sealer.

Looks like a great sale at Albertsons!

Sunday Preview Double Deal at Walmart

Saturday, October 3, 2009
They have raised the price of the Sunday Preview double newspaper deals at Walmart...they were $3 for a double pack this morning... :(

Good Deal Alert!

The Walmart on 5400 South and Redwood Road has a large section of clearanced items (lots and lots of toys, some home goods, some hardware and other misc stuff) up near the garden center. When I was there this morning, they announced that today all clearance items in that section are an additional 50% off!

I picked up a 6" orbital sander for, get this, $5! I got two floatie swimming suit sets for $4.50 each. There were some really good deals on toys for Christmas or upcoming birthdays.

[Please note: The items were marked as clearance, but the additional 50% was not included in the stickered price - they were instructing the cashiers to take the additional 50% off manual at the registers, so if you head over there, you'll need to watch for this.]

It's General Conference Time!

This weekend is a great time to:

1) Check and/or replace the batteries in the smoke detectors throughout your house.

2) Check and replace (as needed) the food in your 72-hour kits.

3) Check sizes on clothing in your 72-hour kits and make sure they are current for all family members.

4) If you have two sets of extra clothes for your 72-hour kits (one warm weather, one cold weather), it's time to switch them out and put in the cold weather ones. Make sure you include gloves, scarves and hats!

We opened our 72-hour kits this morning and took out all of the soon-to-expire food, and put it in a bowl. We have spent the day munching on it, and I then put new food back in the kits.

Because I just put the new food bags together six months ago, most of the items were still good and did not need to be rotated yet (thank goodness). But come next spring, I'm going to have to replace just about everything. At least we'll have plenty to eat that weekend! :)
